Mile End Hospital is a community hospital situated in the Mile End area of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
The building dates to 1859, originally established as an infirmary for the local workhouse. It became known as Mile End Hospital in 1930 and has been part of the NHS since 1948, currently under the management of Barts Health NHS Trust.
The hospital delivers a range of specialist and general outpatient services that support the local community.
Barts Health NHS Trust decided to enhance the Mile End Hospital facilities by renovating an existing on-site space to create a Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC).
London-based Ansell + Bailey, a well-established practice specialising in the healthcare sector, oversaw design responsibilities. Denise Cloutt, Associate/Project Architect, led the project Design Team, relishing the opportunity to create a space that would noticeably enhance patient experience.
The Design Team worked alongside the Trust, discussing options that met the needs of staff, patients, and visitors.
When specifying the CDC flooring, both parties centred on functionality to meet the exacting needs of a healthcare environment whilst withstanding strict cleaning regimes. Together, they considered how flooring could designate areas, reinforce the wayfinding strategy, and enhance the environment for all users.
Ansell + Bailey were already familiar with Polyflor, whose Customer Technical Services Department (CTSD) had previously advised the practice on the most suitable flooring within specific healthcare environments.
Following meetings with the Trust, and upon further contact with CTSD, Ansell + Bailey selected approximately 900m2 of the following Polyflor shades:
- Forest fx PUR, Oslo Oak (3104)
- Palettone PUR, Dove Tail (8607)
- Palettone PUR, Potters Wheel (8628)
- Palettone PUR, Pennyroyal Mint (8652)
- Palettone PUR, Crisp Apple (8653)
- Palettone SD, Dove Tail (8607SD)
- Polysafe Verona PUR Original, Oregano (5210)
- Prestige PUR, Grey Marl (1930)
Reflecting on the project, Denise confirmed that each Polyflor collection presented various aesthetic choices and colourways, allowing the Design Team to ensure functionality of space.
She was especially impressed with Palettone SD, which offered Static Dissipative flooring in various Palettone PUR shades, eliminating compromise on aesthetics and functionality in specialist rooms.
Storm Building, the Twickenham-based main contractor, employed neighbouring Kendal Office Contracts to complete all flooring work under the management of Mark Tulett.
Over a three-month phased period, a duo of skilled flooring fitters completed all subfloor preparations and Polyflor installation. They experienced a seamless process, ensuring a high-quality finish and timely completion.
“A smooth installation and visually impressive finish,” commented Tulett. “Polyflor never disappoints.”
Since opening, Mile End Hospital CDC has noticeably strengthened the level of service available on site. Polyflor flooring successfully lifts the new interior, accentuated by pastel colours and customised floral feature walls, forming a key component of its soothing décor.
“The flooring was an integral part of the interior design strategy, helping to create a sense of identity for each diagnostic function and working in harmony with the bespoke artwork developed for the project.”
